After You Move In

Once all of the unpacking is done and your new home is all set up, it's time to start putting together your daily life in your new home. When moving from another city, you need to do more than find that new research and development credit to start your small business and find a new school for your kids. You need to do everything from finding the local post office depot to finding a new hairdresser who won't leave you wearing a hat for a month.

Your neighbors and new coworkers can be great resources when it comes to setting up your whole new life. Head to the house next door or introduce yourself when someone's out in their garden. Asking if there's a local adult hockey tournament where your husband can play or directions to the supermarket are a great conversation starter. It's always nice to be friendly with those living around you and they can be very helpful in finding the best and most convenient amenities. Maybe you could invite the person at work sitting at the next desk to try a faux painting instruction class with you or recommend a gym that includes a great spin class. Building a good network in your new town means both finding reliable people and services that you can count on.

But there may be some things that you don't feel comfortable asking someone for advice on that you just met. There are ways to get this information as well. The Internet is a great resource for finding customer reviews on a number of businesses. If you're looking for a dentist or family counselling Toronto and other city centers usually have organizations in place to help you find out who is reputable and who is accepting new patients or clients. Browse the local Akron phone book to find the number for such organizations or look online.

If you're looking for financial or business support, contact the representatives who helped you in your previous city. There is a network among business professionals that extends past their own city and usually they can recommend someone who can be of service to you in your new city or town. Whether you're looking for someone to help you set up your new mortgage or help you manage your actively managed ETFs, you're going to want someone who comes recommended from someone you trust. But, a recommendation is not enough. Make sure you do your own research on anyone you're going to trust with handling your money. We all hear horror stories in the news of people being taking advantage of by investment specialists. You don't want to see your life savings slip away in the wrong hands.

If you have children, try and get them involved in the activities they enjoyed in their previous home. Whether they were an athlete or an artist, getting them doing things that they are familiar with and enjoy will help smooth the transition of a big move. Do the same for yourself. Adding a sense of normalcy and routine into your lives quickly is a good way to convince yourself that your new home is the right place for you.
